I’m Raeisa, a Type-A self-proclaimed foodie, avid wannabe chef, beach bum, gym lover, risk taker, fighter for “world peace”, daring dreamer, brain cancer warrior and overall lover of life.
After commencing my weight loss journey in March 2013, I slowly began to get my body, confidence and self-esteem back. Then, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July of 2013, and have since undergone a series of lifestyle changes to give myself the biological weapons I needed to fight my cancer.
I’ve adopted a holistic, all natural, whole foods approach to eating which has proven to be of invaluable benefit to my struggle. After enduring seizures, fainting, a weakened immune system, nose bleeds, severe migraines and just overall sucky days, this approach has helped to ease the pain and symptoms of my radiation treatment. Through all this, I found a brilliant silver lining and extremely indulgent hobby—food!
Using the strict dietary requirements given to me by my doctors, I embarked on a food journey that would transform my cancer adventure in a way I never could have imagined.
The colours, the variety, the smells, the tastes—oh the possibilities!
I found solace in the kitchen, and even when the radiation had me feeling like I couldn’t run with my nephew, or hold lengthy (hilarious) conversations with my sisters, or just relish the company of my mom, somehow I would always find the strength to concoct my healthy versions of classic originals like mudslides, apple cinnamon pie and (my all time favorite) smoothies!
Having earned my BSc in Psychology and currently pursuing my Master’s in International Relations, I hope to combat human rights issues, travelling to the far-reaches of the world offering my assistance to those in need, and being the change I want to see in the world! Yes…I used a cliché!
Being a bit of an over-achiever, I’m studying French and Mandarin and Arabic, am set to start learning Portuguese, and am aiming to polish up my Spanish. I am presently considered a student by profession, but I tutor privately to children in need of study skills, exam preparation or just a little extra help. On the side, I am a Research Assistant to two professors at the University of the West Indies (UWI) on a number of projects ranging from human rights to piracy in the Horn of Africa.
I hope to reach out to as many people as possible through my words to show that cancer, no matter how strong it may seem, is never as strong as the human spirit!
Much more deliciousness to come!
