Don’t judge me. I don’t know my country, but I’m trying in earnest to visit a new town every few weeks. Sweet T&T surprises me daily. I drove through the town of El Socorro the other day for the first time. The best surprise of the experience was driving through at sunset, during the final call to prayer of the day. I had no idea that El Socorro had such a large Muslim population. For a moment, I felt like I was back living in Egypt, one of the few places on Earth where I truly felt that my soul was happy and inspired. How I long for those moments where in the midst of absolute anarchy, you unexpectedly hear voices of the cosmos reminding you to have a moment of peace.

One muezzin initiates the call, another echoes a few seconds later from a neighbouring mosque, and then another and another, until the reverberation of their sweeping voices envelops the entire metropolis. The extemporary harmony creates a humbling wave of sound which silences and transforms the frenzied hullabaloo of the streets of beautiful Cairo, beginning with the first rays of dawn and ending as night embraces the city.

Mystics of the East believed that various sounds produce various patterns that create the never-ending multiplicity of forms, dimensions and masses that are apparent around us. They also believed that the power of sound could be channelled to generate positive change. This is why many traditions use particular equations of sound (hymns or mantras) to harness positive energy. Connecting our consciousness with positive sound vibrations was thought to bring spiritual verves into our human space. Ancient spiritual traditions were pretty much all in agreement that applying sound to any being or any matter could change its state. Ever had someone telling you to play music for your dying plant? Hmmm…

Who would have thought that a short drive through El Socorro would get me thinking about the metaphysics and spirituality of sound? Ever since my last set of travels to the Middle East, I’ve been yearning for the melody of these distant lands, but the healing and humbling power of sound is all around, in every breath, in every vibration. Note to self…
